Youthful joy and love was overshadowed by the threat of the HIV/Aids pandemic. A time of great loss. Paralyzing fears. Abject loneliness. Momentary pleasures. Poetic imaginings. Youth. Longing. Mystery. Ambition. Wanting. Desires. The world outside was a swirling blur of all of this.
2021
A new pandemic has robbed us of time, space and loved ones.
Looking out our windows we piece together an unknown future that lies before us, swirling the fog through which we pass.

CORONACH (1994-2021)

1994

In a garden the portal stood.
Thawing
untold silenced voices.
Unwitting Sirens,
appeared at dusk.
Peering memories
in dawn’s light returned.
Melting the mourning song.

Familiar notes ring out.
Echoes in the ether.
Perhaps,
simply,
a new siren.

We were but children
making beds
together.
Alarms yet to ring
for us.
Our time thereafter
soon came,
as the floor
made way
for graves.

An empty bed
waits
to be filled
again.
Whilst walls
sing memories.
Whispered names
of those
almost
forgotten.

What is blind vanity
but as yet an untethered
dream deferred.

A covenant ratified in blood
We choose to love, we do not choose to cease loving
Blood is the price of blood
Love is the breath that sustains us
Stained with blood. Bestowed in love.

A meditation on gay socio cultural behavior and art history. By referencing a seminal “readymade” and public locations for male cruising, I’m contextualizing “Fountain” R. Mutt aka Marcel Duchamp as an origin "father" for contemporary art with generations of gay men as "fathers", elders, mentors and artists lost to the HIV/Aids pandemic. Cruising for sex, art and death, intertwine time, place, identity and impermanence stitching them together. The bells toll on.
